1950s: Our current Managing Director Mark Rodger’s grandfather, Tommy Rodger, started by selling bundles of firewood to local customers from Greenock’s Duncan Street.
Late 1950s: Greenock Central Sawmills is established as a timber merchant in Greenock’s Wellington Street.
Late 1980s: Greenock Central Sawmills is relocated to Greenock’s Union Street under the direction of Mark’s father, Tom Rodger.
1998: Greenock Central Sawmills is closed as family members pursued other ventures or retire.
1999: Tom Rodger establishes M&J Timber in Greenock.
2001: M&J Timber expands its offering to include heavyside building materials.
2010: M&J, now known as M&J Builders Merchants, relocates to a purpose-built site in Greenock, marking a significant milestone in their growth.
2013: M&J expands its reach by opening a second branch in Largs and joins h&b Buying Group.
2019: M&J acquires South Lanarkshire Building Supplies, a successful family-owned business established in 1997, serving Lanarkshire and beyond bringing the total number of branches to 3.Â
2023: M&J continues its expansion by acquiring family-owned business GTi Direct, which has operated in Dunoon, Argyll, since 1994. After a major refurbishment programme is completed, branch 4 is successfully launched.
2024: Combining all of the best parts from M&J, South Lanarkshire Building Supplies and GTi Direct - Build Depot is created. A new and unified identity proudly standing as a leading independent builders' merchant, serving trade professionals and homeowners across west and central Scotland.
